Wrestling in Turkey
26 May 2006

Wrestling fans could witness a different side of the sport with oil wrestling in Turkey.

The Traditional Kirkpinar Oil-Wrestling Festival takes place in the town of Edirne from 5 to 11 July, with over a thousand competitors oiling up to become the champion an honour that brings national celebrity.

The contest which has been running for over 600 years - also brings a fair to the town with stalls selling goods from the Middle East, the Balkans and Eastern Europe creating a meeting place of cultures.

Edirne is located in the west of Turkey in Thrace near the Greek border and is known as a living museum for its great architectural heritage.

The city - formally known as Adrianople - was once the second city of the Ottoman Empire and in the 18th century was one of the largest metropolises in Europe.

Its mosques, bridges, old bazaar places and palaces have survived well over the centuries and the nearby nature reserves and lakes mean the area is well worth exploring.
