Copenhagen castle celebrates 400 years
30 May 2006

This summer Copenhagen is celebrating the 400th anniversary of Rosenborg castle.

Rosenborg, situated in the centre of the Danish capital, will play host to a series of events to mark its construction in 1606.

Events will include special exhibitions of the Royal Danish Collections and concerts of Renaissance music within the royal apartments.

The castle stands in the Kongens Have - or King's Garden - and because of the central location many tourists and Copenhageners head to there for a little peace and quiet in the city.

Rosenborg first started life as a summer residence for Christian IV one of Denmark's most colourful and popular kings - but over the centuries it was extended and renovated and today its exterior is in the Dutch renaissance style.

The castle is now home to a museum showing visitors how the royals lived, including Christian IV's toilet or secret room as it was known - and many of the family's private rooms.

Other royal locations in Copenhagen include the Danish royal family's winter residence Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace now home to the Danish government and Kronborg Castle, the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet.
