Canada's wild west
31 May 2006

Canada has been revealed as the backdrop for many recent westerns.

The province of Alberta has most recently been used as a double for the US in the Oscar-winner Brokeback Mountain and Robin Williams' new comedy RV.

Brad Pitt has also roamed the Alberta countryside in the film The Assassination of Jesse James.

Tours exist to take visitors to all the sights featured in the films, but for those inspired to experience the cowboy life for real a number of ranches offer the chance to ride out on the trail: Alberto holds rodeos through the year and it is also home to one of the world's largest buffalo preserves.

The province's authorities are also hoping the new Robin Williams film set in Utah and Colorado but filmed in Alberta will encourage families to follow the storyline and hire a motorhome for a road trip.

While Williams was in the area he made such an impression that he was made mayor for the day in the small rural town of Milk River.
