Football fans head to Balearics for World Cup
07 June 2006
The Balearics have been named as the most popular destination for England football fans to head to enjoy the World Cup in the sun.
A survey found that 97% of Britons heading to Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza over the next month had the football in mind, although Welsh and Scottish fans won't be heading there to cheer on Beckham, Crouch and Cole.
The next most popular football destinations to head to or to avoid, depending on your point of view were the Canaries, mainland Spain, Turkey and Greece.
Vicky Emmott, of Halifax, which was behind the research, said: 'It's very interesting to see how the World Cup is shaping how Britons holiday this year.
'Many die-hard fans are carefully researching the resort, accommodation and even flight times to make sure that they can watch the big games.'
When it comes to choosing the venue for watching the games, fans were split between local bars and British pubs with 42% going native and 40% choosing the atmosphere of a local on the Mediterranean. The rest said they would stay in the hotel either at the hotel bar or in their rooms.
The bar bill for a week's viewing of the football was calculated as being £312.73.
For those wishing to escape the football, the most popular destinations were Italy and the US although both teams are competing in the World Cup.
