Backpackers head back to Europe
07 June 2006

Europe is becoming increasingly popular again with backpackers, a new poll has found.

The Lonely Planet survey of 33,000 travellers from 170 countries showed Greece, Italy and Spain are regaining popularity over South America with travellers who are heading off the beaten track.

Tom Hall, of Lonely Planet, said: 'There has definitely been a surge in people travelling to the "old favourites", countries such as the United States, Spain, Italy and Greece.

'These destinations have always been popular with Brits but factors such as cheaper air travel and the accessibility of long-haul destinations has meant that people have been travelling further afield. Fashionable destinations come and go but the classics remain.'

However, the most popular destination for the second year running was Australia, followed by the US, Thailand, Spain and New Zealand.

The poll also revealed the reasons people had for heading out with their backpacks.

The most popular aims were to explore other cultures and to escape life for a while.
