Brittany celebrates Celtic culture
08 June 2006

The Festival de Cornouaille - literally the Festival of Cornwall has taken place in the French town of Quimper since 1922 celebrating Breton and Celtic culture.

From 15 to 23 July concerts, parades, shows and markets showing off the best of local culture take over the medieval town with performers from Ireland, Serbia and Britain performing alongside local musicians, although not only traditional music is organised.

This year also sees Cesaria Evora - the Senegalese diva performing at the festival, showing the diverse range of musical styles the event's organisers have now embraced.

The focus for celebration is the town's cathedral, as the square outside hosts many of the free concerts and the budget of £1m means a good show is always put on.

As well as enjoying the music, there is also the chance to learn a little about the local culture with workshops for children and adults in dance and music.
