Brussels history comes alive
08 June 2006

Brussels' past will come alive this July with a historical re-enactment involving hundreds of people in 16th century costume.

In 1549 the Ommegang procession Flemish for walk around took place in honour of Charles V and his son and the reconstruction of a festival has happened for the last 175 years.

A 2km parade through the city precedes a show in the Grand-Place, although events will be taking place from 4 to 6 July.

The parade involves dozens of horses, carts, a great deal of flag waving and the backdrop of the Grand-Place and the medieval town hall all help to create an authentic atmosphere.

As the evening comes, historic accuracy is lost a little as the square becomes bathed in light and fireworks illuminate the sky. The show continues with music and dance into the night.
