Continental restores full service to Cancun
08 June 2006
For the first time since Hurricane Wilma, Continental is running a full service to the Mexican resort of Cancun.
Mexican authorities have now almost fully repaired damage to areas hit by the hurricane - which struck last October - and the airline has responded with the return to service of all its 61 weekly services to Cancun International Airport.
An airline spokesman said: "Continental was one of the last airlines to stop flying to Cancun before the hurricane and one of the first carriers to resume scheduled passenger service after the hurricane.
"The airline also flew sixteen relief flights - eight to Cancun and eight to Merida - to evacuate tourists who were stranded in the region."
Continental Airlines has also announced it is to increase the size of its fleet with the purchase of 34 new planes.
The US airline will buy 10 Boeing 787s and 24 Boeing 737s as it tries to increase the number of destinations it serves across the world.
Larry Kellner, Continental chairman and chief executive, said: "These aircraft will give us the ability to seize long-haul market opportunities, remove less efficient aircraft from our fleet and maintain our role as a global network leader."
