Government relaxes travel advice to volcanic Vanuatu
08 June 2006

The Foreign Office (FO) has lifted its recommendation against travel to the Pacific islands that form Vanuatu.

The warning was first given after the volcano Mount Manaro became highly active in November 2005 and locals were evacuated.

The FO advice now states: "We advise caution when considering travel to islands of Ambrym and Tanna, which are also currently affected by volcanic activity.

"While Mount Manaro on the island of Ambae has now become less active since erupting in November 2005, visitors should check with the Vanuatu Tourist Office for latest reports before travelling to the island."

Besides Vanuatu's volcanoes, the archipelago of 83 islands attracts visits with its diverse culture with 133 languages used by it 218,000 people and French and British influences to be found and beaches, reefs for diving and thick forests.

The nation also came to note after hosting the US TV series Survivor.
