Half of US uses travel websites
09 June 2006
New research has revealed the massive growth of using the internet to organise holidays.
Nearly 150 million prospective travellers used travel websites in the US in 2005 - around half the population - an increase of 35% on 2004, the firm comScore found.
"The web is extraordinarily well-suited to helping consumers make travel plans and increases in home broadband penetration should continue to fuel growth in the online travel sector," said Sara Stevens, director of comScore Travel Solutions.
The research found that online travellers went to an average of three sites when planning a holiday and they shopped around primarily to find the best prices.
The internet also allows travellers to leave the planning of a holiday to much later, with 72 per cent of people planning holidays in the last eight weeks before leaving.
US travellers booking online spent $60 billion last year, a 20 per cent increase on the year before.
