BA named Airline of the Year
09 June 2006

British Airways has been awarded the title of Airline of the Year at the World Airline Awards.

The airline beat off competition from Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways and Emirates respectively the top five airlines behind BA to take the award, which is based on surveys filled out by 13.6m passengers.

Edward Plaisted, chief executive of Skytrax that organises the awards, explained the improved performance of BA came despite facing a lot of competition.

He said: 'An airline undergoing considerable changes and cutting product levels to compete across Europe with the low-cost airline competition, a key element to emerge in the passenger voting for British Airways was that it performs well in terms of general product and service consistency.'

Mr Plaisted added ratings from premium passengers had been much higher for BA than for other airlines.

'Clearly they are doing something right in that particular market,' he said.

Other awards went to Thai Airways for best cabin staff, Emirates for best in-flight entertainment and Gulf Air for best onboard catering.
