Dresden celebrates 800 years
09 June 2006

This year Dresden celebrates the 800th anniversary of its founding.

Events are taking place throughout the year, but after the final whistle of the World Cup the City Festival, from 14 to 23 July, will continue to bring visitors from around the world.

The festival of open air theatre will bring a few surprises to the city centre, which will become the stage for performers.

Highlights of the City Festival include Symphonic Salsa, where opera and salsa meet, and the transformation of the Augustus Bridge for ten days into an outdoor arts centre with music, art, dance and a life-sized puppet performance.

Later this year the Green Vault, the treasure chamber established in the 18th century by Saxon Elector Augustus II, will reopen after a £29m renovation.

The vault reopens on 15 September when the Baroque interior design recreated by 100 specialist craftsman and Augustus's collection will be on public view again.
