Check over your passport now
13 June 2006
With six weeks before the summer holidays start, parents are being urged to check their family's passports now.
The warning comes as figures reveal last summer, 106,000 people had to pay £48 for same day passport renewal after not leaving enough time to get new documents.
Home Office minister Joan Ryan said: 'The school holiday period is always one of the busiest times of year for the Identity and Passport Service (IPS), with people having to make last minute applications to ensure they can get on the plane for their summer holiday.
'The advice to holidaymakers from IPS is to check now that they have their passports and that they are still valid, to avoid disappointment and to ensure they are not left grounded at the airport.'
An IPS survey has found that one in five people check their passports just one day before travelling, while 15% leave it until the last few hours.
It was also revealed that 7% of those heading abroad on holiday have had last minute panics over passports and an unlucky 3% have left home without a passport.
The IPS is also reminding families travelling to the USA that under the US Visa Waiver rules, children must have their own machine-readable passport and those without - including children on a parental passport - will need a visa to travel to the US.
