Gallic donkey rides
13 June 2006

The beach at the French resort of Trouville prepares itself each summer for the excitement of the donkey races

The somewhat traditionally British pastime takes a Gallic twist as locals bet on which donkey will win and cheer on the quadrupeds and their jockeys to success.

The race known as Le Course D'Anes - takes place on 20 August and was inspired by Trouville's rivalry with the nearby town of Deauville, which holds a proper horse racing event on the same day.

The racing starts in the afternoon and there are six races in total, but perhaps the biggest attraction is the small town festival atmosphere, with plenty of music and food on offer.

Trouville, on the Atlantic coast north east of Paris, first became a resort in the mid-19th century and many of the hotels and villas that line the seafront hail from this era.

One of the highlights of the town, which has many bars, clubs and restaurants, is the neo-classical Grand Casino which as recently been restored to its former glory.
