Portugal rocks in the summer
14 June 2006

North of Porto, the Paredes de Coura has a population of under 10,000, but each year brings some of the biggest names of rock to its festival

This year, 30,000 people are expected to head to the small hillside town to see Morrissey, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Members of the Public and Bauhaus.

The festival runs from 14 to 17 August, but besides the rock there is also the chance to get involved with jazz workshops, relax with yoga and listen to poetry.

The town, with its low red-roofed houses, and green hills of the surrounding countryside are also both worth exploring, showing a more traditional side to Portuguese life.

Nearby, Porto also hosts a music festival of note ten days later on 26 and 27 August.

The city's Crystal Palace gardens are home to concerts from the best up-and-coming bands in Portugal. Like the Paredes de Coura festival, the backdrop of the gardens and the palace do not quite fit the usual rock festival image, but they help to create a unique experience.
