British Airways is to change baggage limits to allow passengers with children to fly with more.

From 11 October, the airline will allow travelling parents to take a standard-sized bag on board for their child when flying, as well as their own allowance.

There will also be a free entitlement for infants of one bag weighing up to 23kg plus a collapsible pushchair or buggy.

All passengers will also be able to carry one piece of sporting equipment free of charge.

From 5 July, the amount of hand baggage air travellers will be allowed to take on board will be one standard-sized bag and one briefcase, laptop computer bag or similar sized bag.

However, the maximum weight for any checked bag will be reduced to 23kg, but the number of bags or total weight will depend upon the route and class of travel.

Martin George, BA commercial director, said: 'Making the airport experience simpler and speedier for our customers is one of our key objectives as we move towards the opening of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5 in March 2008.

'We have created new policies which are easier to understand and will reduce queuing time at airports.

'As a package, our new baggage allowances remain comparable to or more generous than our current policies and our main competitors.'

Further changes from October, will see BA no longer allowing passengers to carry pets as baggage, instead the animals must be carried as cargo.
