Aberdeen leads UK airport growth
14 June 2006
May saw passenger numbers at Aberdeen Airport rise by 13.1%.
Aberdeen recorded the highest level of growth for the month of any BAA airport in the UK with 274,200 passengers travelling through it.
However, the airport wishes to grow even further - allowing as many as 5.3m people to fly by 2030 almost doubling current levels.
Plans include a runway extension and an expansion of the current terminal building.
Andy Flower, Aberdeen Airport's managing director, said: 'This is a very exciting time for Aberdeen Airport. The last 18 months has seen Aberdeen Airport record significant growth in passenger numbers and attract record numbers of new routes and services.
'An extension to our runway will ensure we can continue to grow and offer people living in North East Scotland a greater range of international destinations from their local airport.'
The most popular airport in the country by far remained Heathrow, with 5,7m passengers jetting off from the London airport in May. Over the last 12 months 67.7m travellers used Heathrow.
Stansted also saw large growth in May, with 2.1m people travelling an increase of 11.3%
