Pick a peck of Italian pickled peppers
14 June 2006
With Italy famous throughout the world for its cuisine the town of Motta di Costigliole does not choose pasta or wine to celebrate in its food festival.
On 30 July to 3 August, the northern Italian town celebrates peppers, with the 60th annual Sagra del Peperone.
Besides the chance to taste locally grown square peppers or peperone quadrato d'Asti the festival also includes plenty of music, dance and wine to celebrate the local produce.
Despite all the distractions, food remains high on the agenda and the festival menu is fixed well before visitors arrive.
This year, rabbit, gnocchi, ravioli and salmon are all on the menus along with walnut cake with custard, Bavarian peaches and chocolate mousse showing an international choice for pudding.
Running alongside the vegetable-inspired celebrations, Festa Flora the Flower Festival - takes place from 1 to 3 August, meaning the town is full of colour, not only from the red, yellow and green of the peppers.
Motta di Costigliole, situated in the hills between Turin and Genoa, is worth visiting without the peppers, representing a typical small Italian town, with family-run restaurants and traditional warm welcome for visitors.
