Puck off, King Goat!
15 June 2006

This August a goat will be crowned in the Irish village of Killorglin's Puck Fair.

From 10 to 12 August the fair takes over the County Kerry village as thousands of visitors come to enjoy the festivities.

The reign of the goat, however, is not long as with the crowning taking place on the first day - known as the Gathering Day - but a dethronement occurs on the third and final day the Scattering Day.

A throne is set up for the goat - on a scaffolding 25ft above the village's rowing club - and he also has a queen to aid him during his reign which the village celebrates with parades, parties, traditional music and a good few pints of Guinness.

The origins of the festival are uncertain but it is thought to date back to the pre-Christian era and in 1603 King James granted the fair legal status.
