Costa del Sol strike off
16 June 2006

A strike of hotel workers on the Costa del Sol has been called off.

Unions representing the workers had threatened to strike during the summer over a pay dispute.

However, after four and half hours of talks, the unions and hoteliers forged a deal this week, meaning the strike will be off and the workers will receive pay increases of 1% over inflation for the next four years.

If the strike had gone ahead, more than 15,000 workers would have walked out, leaving many hotels and resorts forced to close.

Miguel Sanchez, president of the Costa del Sol Hoteliers Association, said after leaving the talks that all that now needed to be done was to work hard to ensure the hotels were full for the summer.

The effect of the strikes could have been greater, as over recent years hotels in Spain have suffered staff shortages, because many young people are turning to the better paid construction industry.

Hotels, however, have tried to offset this loss of staff by employing workers from Latin America.
