Bush puffs at security
16 June 2006

A puff of air is the latest security feature introduced at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

The airport has installed two new security measures that use air to check for traces of explosives.

As passengers pass through the air scanner, a puff of air blows over them and is sucked away. The air that has passed over the passenger is then checked for certain ions and a result is given in 17 seconds.

The makers of the machines claim they are sensitive enough to 'pinpoint a grain of sand in a swimming pool'.

Not all passengers will have to go through the puffers, as they can only scan 180 passengers an hour, but it is hoped the machines will reduce the need for pat-down checks, which some passengers do not like.
