India is the favoured destination for Brits
19 June 2006
India is gradually emerging as a favourite holiday destination among American and British tourists, according to a new report.
Market research company RNCOS has found that inbound tourism has been increasing at a rate of 11% per annum in the last few years, peaking between the months of October and December.
It is claimed that most tourists visiting India have been drawn to northern and western parts of the country although stunning beaches and wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala in the south have also made this a popular choice.
A driving force behind the strength of the Indian tourism industry has been the strong support from the government in recent years, with the 'Incredible India' campaign proving hugely successful.
The number of tourists visiting the country in 2005 increased by a staggering 16% and it is thought that much of the revenue was ploughed back into the industry.
The new RNCOS report argues that India is the preferred destination of around 42% of all foreign tourists visiting South Asia, while it also attracts people to stay for longer periods than any other destination in the region.
Visitors from the UK and the US accounted for 30% of all tourist traffic in India last year, with approximately 15% each.
