Europe makes skies safer
21 June 2006
The European Commission has added four names to its blacklist of airlines.
The first blacklist was published in March and the updated version now includes Sudan-based Air West, Sky Gate International (licensed in Kyrgyzstan) and Blue Wing based in Surinam.
Kyrgyzstan's Star Jet was also added to the list, after it was revealed it was the same company as Star Air, licensed in Sierra Leone and already banned within the EU.
The ban is designed not only to stop the airlines flying in the EU, but also to let prospective passengers travelling outside Europe know which airlines can be trusted for safety.
The complete list of blacklisted airlines now heavily features firms from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Swaziland.
However, moves have been made to take airlines off the list. Following inspections, companies based in Mauritania will no longer be automatically subject to a ban on flying.
