One in 12 holidays uninsured
26 June 2006

One in 12 summer holidays made this year by Brits will not be insured, new research has found.

It is estimated that the 2.6m people holidaying this summer without protection will be carrying £2.1 billion worth of luggage, having spent £4.2 billion on their vacations.

Robert O'May, of Sainsbury's, which produced the research said: 'Some 2.61m people will risk losing a fortune this year by having no cover against a holiday calamity such as losing baggage, suffering an accident or injury and needing medical treatment or even having to cancel their trip altogether.'

Across the country, 13% of travellers in the south east said they would not take insurance, and 8% from the north

Best-prepared travellers were from London and Scotland with only 4% and 5% respectively holidaying uninsured.

Mr O'May also warned people not to assume the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) offers anything other that basic medical protection

'It's also important to remember that the new government EHIC form like the E111 before it is not an insurance policy. It provides emergency medical care only, which in some destinations may be very limited,' he explained
