Warsaw's musical gardens
27 June 2006

This summer the grounds of Warsaw's Royal Castle will come alive with music.

From 2 July to 5 August the castle will host Musical Gardens, a series of musical events.

This year is the sixth time edition of Musical Gardens and the daily events include live concerts and films of operas and ballets.

Performances will include works by Mozart, Chopin, Strauss and Rossini and around 40,000 people are expected to come to enjoy the music in a unique setting.

The castle was once the official residence of the Polish kings after the nation's capital was moved from Krakow.

During World War II, it was completely destroyed along with much of Warsaw's old town - but the works of art inside were removed and hidden before the Nazi occupation of the capital.

In the 1970s the castle was rebuilt and the royal collection was returned, and it now stands as a major sight within Warsaw.
