Tibet learns new language of trains
30 June 2006
A new railway linking the western province of Qinghai and the Tibetan capital Lhasa is set bring new words as well as visitors to Tibet.
Tibet's mountainous terrain meant no railway was ever built in the region, but from 1 July the Qinghai-Tibet Railway will start services.
Without ever having a railway before, the people of Tibet are now having to learn 28 new words and phrases to do with trains.
Head of the list is the word 'megor', which means train.
The Chinese National Tourism Bureau estimates the railway will bring 2.5m visitors to Tibet, up from the 1.8m who visited last year.
Heading through the mountains, the carriages have had to be fitted with special enriched-oxygen and UV-protection systems so passengers do not suffer from altitude sickness.
Trains will also travel along the world's highest railway lines, with the Tanggula Pass at a height of 5,072 metres above sea level.
On the 1,142 km journey from Golmud in the Qinghai Province and to Lhasa, the train will reach speeds of 120kph, although stops will take place to allow travellers to enjoy the views.
