European Parliament backs green airline tax
05 July 2006

The European Parliament has voted to introduce a new tax for airlines.

The proposals are not binding, but if eventually introduced would see travellers facing higher prices for airline tickets.

It is hoped the proposals will help to reduce the environmental impact of flying by introducing an emissions trading system for airlines which are not included in the Kyoto Protocol and a series of levies.

Green MEP Dr Caroline Lucas said during the debate that doing nothing to curtail greenhouse gas emissions by airlines "just isn't an option".

She added: "We simply have no choice but to clip the airlines' wings and force them to reduce their impact on the climate, if we are to stand any chance of cutting our emissions by the level that's needed to halt the deadly march of climate change."

Before any changes can be made and the price of flying increases the proposals will have to be accepted by the European Commission, which is unlikely to do so in the near future.

However, the strength of feeling over the issue with the vote being won 439 votes to 74 means the increasing the cost of flying to help the environment is on the agenda and could eventually come into force.
