Tour heads round France
06 July 2006

The world's most famous cycling race, the Tour de France, started this week from Strasbourg.

This year the tour takes an anticlockwise route around France, also popping into the Netherlands.

Towns along the route include Rennes and Lorient in Brittany, Dax and Cambo-les-Bains in the south west and Carcassonne and Beziers beside the Mediterranean coast.

The tour also passes through the Alps along the Italian border before heading to Paris and the final stage that finishes on the Champs-Elysees on 23 July.

The arrival of the tour to any French town is considered as an honour and local authorities use the world's attention to show off what they have on offer.

Towns also greet the tour with festivals of music, food and wine.

Even if the cyclists are just passing through a town, the locals come out to celebrate and cheer the tour on and taking part can make a highlight of a holiday.
