Summer holidays cost parents £600 per kid
07 July 2006

The six-week summer holidays cost parents on average £600 per child, new research has found.

Around half the cost of having children off school was for child care costing on average £50 a week although many parents take time off work or rely on family and friends.

The summer getaway bites into parents' budgets with 28% of parents spending between £50 and £150 per week per child while abroad and 10% forking out £400 a week.

Abbey, which carried out the research, has also given some advice to parents to make holidays either in the UK or abroad a little cheaper.

The firm suggests focussing trips on free attractions such as museums and galleries instead of theme parks. When heading out and about, simple ways of cutting costs include taking picnics instead of dining out.

Also, by carefully planning and budgeting when on a holiday, families can bring down costs.
