Newcastle goes self-service
07 July 2006
Newcastle International Airport has become the first UK regional airport to bring in self-service kiosks for checking in.
The kiosks will allow passengers to choose their seat and print their own boarding pass quickly and without having to queue at conventional check-in desks.
Over summer, the airport is expecting 20,000 people to pass through the airport each day so it is hoped the new facilities will speed up checking in for all passengers.
'Passengers who choose to check-in using one of the new kiosks can then head straight to the departure lounge. This is particularly advantageous for passengers with hand luggage only.
'Passengers with hold luggage can still bypass the traditional check-in queue at the airport, using new dedicated fast baggage drop facilities located nearby,' said a spokesman for the airport.
Initially, the kiosks will only be available for passengers flying with KLM, but in the coming weeks this will be extended to all airlines.
