US town gives free petrol to visitors
07 July 2006

Visitors to the Tennessee town of Pigeon Forge are being given free petrol.

The Pigeon Forge Great Gas Giveaway's Gas Patrol picks winners at random from visitors to the town and presents them with $30 (£16) tokens for free petrol.

In total over the summer the town aims to give away 8,500 gallons of petrol or enough to fill a tanker truck.

Kay Powell, assistant director of the tourism department, said: 'Some winners have a hard time believing they're getting something for nothing, but it's true.

'It's our way to make light of today's high gas prices and tickle a bunch of our guests.'

So far winners have mostly come from around the US, but one has hailed from Canada and one from the UK.

The Gas Patrol made up of volunteers has so far handed out the vouchers at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, hotels, theatres and the city's tourist information centre.

However, perhaps Pigeon Forge's biggest attraction is Dollywood the theme park owned by Dolly Parton.
