Australian islands reopen after cyclone
10 July 2006
Resorts on islands off the Queensland coast reopen this month after the damage caused by March's Cyclone Larry.
The resorts on the Family Islands are set to reopen and the hotels have used the cyclone as an excuse to update facilities.
Darren Cann, general manager of operations for one of the hotel groups on the islands, said: 'Cyclone Larry has allowed us to create a new look and feel.'
The rain forests on the islands also suffered during the cyclone, although heavy rains have encouraged regrowth along with replanting programmes.
On Dunk Island, the cyclone has led to tennis and squash courts being replaced, although the golf course had to be reduced to nine holes.
When Cyclone Larry hit in March, 50,000 homes were left without electricity and the winds of up to 174mph caused around £100m worth of damage.
