More flights to Oz
10 July 2006

All restrictions on the number of flights between Australia and the UK will be lifted immediately, the Australian government has announced.

The move came following negotiations in Canberra last week between Australian and British officials and has been described as a 'break through' by Australian transport minister Warren Truss.

He said: 'Australian and UK carriers can now freely determine the number of services operated between our two countries.'

Before the agreement there had been no increases in the number of flights since 1996 despite the increased demand.

The airlines have yet to respond to the changes, but Qantas, British Airways and Virgin currently limited to 28, 14 and seven flights a week respectively are all expected to increase services between the two countries, followed by other carriers.
