Ancient sculptures returned to Greece
10 July 2006

Two ancient sculptures are set to be returned to Greece by the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Greek culture minister Giorgos Voulgarakis made the announcement today (10 July) that after negotiations a 6th century BC marble relief from the island of Thassos and a 4th century tombstone from Thebes will be returned.

"The decision to return the two ancient artefacts to Greece was based on a thorough internal investigation carried out by the Getty Museum, which concluded that it would be right to return the works," a statement from the museum said.

Talks continue over two further pieces and form a part of the Greek government's move to retrieve as many of the country's lost historic assets as possible from around the world and return them to its museums.

Mr Voulgarakis said: "This is just the beginning. I believe that in the future we will have very good results concerning other antiquities whose return we are seeking."
