Doctors back Qantas nut decision
11 July 2006

The decision by Qantas to ban nuts has been welcomed by the Australian Medical Association (AMA).

Qantas made the decision to minimise the use of peanuts or peanut-based products in its inflight menus to lessen the risks for passengers who suffer from allergies.

The airline will also stop serving peanuts as bar snacks on all flights and in its lounges.

AMA president Dr Mukesh Haikerwal welcomed the move but called for greater awareness of the dangers of nut allergies.

He said: 'The term "food allergy" may sound tame and manageable, but food allergies in an extreme form such as anaphylaxis are a life and death matter.'

The Qantas move follows a similar decision from British Airways (BA).

The BA peanut policy states that peanuts are not included within aircraft meals or snacks in any cabin, except on flights to the Far East when peanut satay is still on the menu.
