Himalayan pass reopened after 44 year
11 July 2006

A Himalayan mountain pass linking Tibet and India reopened last week after being closed for 44 years.

The Nathu La Pass, 4,310 metres above sea-level, was closed after war broke out between China and India and remained closed ever since.

It is hoped the reopening of the pass which was once an offshoot of the Silk Route will help the local economy and tourism in the area.

Pawan Chamling, chief minister of the Indian state of Sikkim, said at the reopening ceremony: 'Its reopening augurs well for the collective well-being of both our countries. Trade and tourism can be integrated here, especially Buddhist circuit tourism. We shall propose a Gangtok-Lhasa bus service at an appropriate time.'

Chinese Ambassador to India Sun Yuxi said: 'We hope the reopening of the Silk Route will improve relations between the two countries.'

The pass is 56km from the Sikkimese capital Gangtok and 430 km from the Tibetan capital Lhasa. It should now take around 10 hours to drive between the two cities through the Himalayas.
