Tourists spend £1bn a day
11 July 2006

The world's tourists spend over £1 billion a day, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

It is estimated £370 billion was spent in 2005 by tourists a rise of 3.4%.

Furthermore, in the first four months of 2006 the UNWTO estimates 236m people went on holiday.

UNWTO secretary general Francesco Frangialli said: 'Visitor spending continues its strong overall growth contributing substantially to global services exports and particularly to the overall trade balances of developing economies. Africa's 7.8% increase is a significant success story.'

Behind Africa, the biggest growth in tourism was recorded in the Middle East and Asia and the Pacific as new areas for travellers to explore are being opened up.

The organisation also noted the growth of short breaks compared with longer holidays, with more travellers preferring shorter holidays more often spurred by the growth of low cost flights.

Over the last five years steady growth in tourism was noted, despite fears over Sars, terrorism and an economic downturn.
