£817m spent at airports to dump foreign currency
12 July 2006

British holidaymakers have spent £817m over the five years buying goods at airports to use up foreign money.

In addition to dumping foreign cash, Brits spent £3.2 billion on unplanned airport purchases often put down to being bored while waiting for flights or the tendency to be more frivolous with money on holiday.

In the last six years the average holidaymaker has spent £48 at airports using up foreign cash, with men spending 65 per cent more than women.

The most common product bought to use up foreign currency was perfume or after-shave, followed by alcohol, food and souvenirs.

The research by Halifax also showed that, taking into account dumped currency and all unplanned purchases, the average British holidaymaker spent £182.77 in airports at the end of their vacations over the past five years.

British holidaymakers are predicted to spend £816m in airports at the end of vacations over the next year.
