Florence named best city in the world
13 July 2006
Florence has been named the best city in the world to visit by readers of the US Travel + Leisure magazine.
The Italian city took the place of Sydney, which held the title for the past four years.
For the sixth year running New York was named the best city in the US and the best hotel title went to the Singita Private Game Reserve in South Africa a previous winner in 2004.
The best island was Bali and the best destination spa was the Chiva-Som International Health Resort in Thailand. Inverlochy Castle in Scotland took the title of the Europe's best hotel.
Travel + Leisure editor-in-chief Nancy Novogrod said: 'A powerful gauge of the interests and tastes of sophisticated travellers, the 2006 World's Best Awards reveal a preference for places farther away, smaller, and more unique than ever before - a lodge in South Africa, a castle in Scotland, and three hotels in India are among the top ten hotels worldwide.
'This year, more Asian properties were selected than in past years, and a lesser-known island, Saba, makes its debut as the best island in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.'
The best international airline was Singapore Airlines.
