Top reasons for missing travel insurance uncovered
13 July 2006
A new survey has uncovered the top five excuses given by the 2.5m Brits who head on holiday each year without insurance.
Just over a fifth of travellers thought they were covered by other policies such as home insurance or as part of some current accounts.
However, while some home insurance policies cover personal possessions they do not cover medical expense or the cost of cancelling a holiday.
Similarly travel insurance which comes with some premium bank accounts may not offer complete cover often only giving limited protection for medical expenses. Holidaymakers should, therefore, check exactly what cover these policies offer.
The next most popular excuse was that people thought the new European Health Information Card offered sufficient cover. Although it does cover some medical expenses in public hospitals only there is no help with repatriation costs.
Other reasons given for not taking insurance were feeling that a claim was unlikely, the insurance was too expensive or simply forgetting.
Robin Reames, of swiftcover, which commissioned the research, said: 'British holidaymakers should think twice before travelling without adequate insurance. The facts speak for themselves and shouldn't be ignored.'
