Holidaymakers told to check cover
14 July 2006

Brits heading on holiday this summer are being reminded to make sure they consider cover as well as cost for insurance.

Holidaymakers have been given a series of tips to get the best cover and price for travel insurance.

Firstly, prospective travellers should check if their household insurance policy covers personal belongings if so they will not have to be added to the travel insurance.

Those with any pre-existing medical conditions should tell the insurer to make sure not only that the right cover can be arranged, but also so claims are not turned down.

When organising cover travellers should also try to find exactly how well they are covered for example, if they can claim for in- and out-patient treatment and if they are covered for the whole cost of a holiday if it is cancelled.

Janet Connor, managing director of insurer RIAS, which gave the advice, said: 'Travel insurance should very much be viewed as an essential purchase in a similar way to arranging your currency.

'When buying insurance consumers need to think of a policy as something they need to tailor, rather than an off-the-shelf product. It is essential to be familiar with the terms of the policy in order to know exactly what you are paying for and what cover you are getting.'
