US to try to boost image through tourism
14 July 2006

US tourism authorities claim the best way for the country to improve its world standing is by encouraging tourism.

Over the last 15 years the number of tourists heading to the US has fallen by 36 per cent and the recent Pew Global Attitude Survey shows the global image of the country has fallen around the world even in nations that have been traditional allies such as Japan and the UK.

However, when travellers visit the US and meet the people their view of the nation improves.

Roger Dow, president of the US Travel Industry Association, told a commission on public diplomacy that by encouraging visitors to the US the country's standing would rise.

He said: 'By bringing visitors to our country, we can share what makes our nation great its people, energy and way of life.

'Research documents the "perception boost" that occurs when someone visits the United States and experiences our nation first-hand.'
