World Cup fails to stop online travel shopping
14 July 2006

The number of visits to travel websites in June was up 15% from May.

Compared with last year the number of people logging on to travel rose by 8%, despite fears that the World Cup would take people's attention and delay them booking holidays until England had exited the tournament.

The data from Hitwise UK show the most searched for destinations were Australia, Turkey, Tenerife, Cyprus and Florida.

Heather Hopkins, director of research for Hitwise UK, said: 'Despite the hype surrounding the World Cup and high hopes for England in early matches, attention of UK consumers does not appear to have been deflected from planning summer holidays.

'Visits to travel websites have grown more rapidly in the past month than during the same period last year. Given the flurry of activity in recent weeks, we are likely to see strong growth for the sector online leading up to the mid-August annual peak.'

The most common terms that people typed into search engines were 'holidays', 'cheap holidays', 'flights', 'travel agents' and 'package holidays'.
