Classic summer in Lucerne
17 July 2006

Lucerne will be holding around 100 events and 30 symphony concerts for its Summer Festival.

The five-week series of concerts featuring orchestras from around the world takes place from 10 August to 17 September at Lucerne's KKL Centre.

The theme to this year's music festival is language with works exploring the fusion of words and sounds.

Starting the festival will be works from Swiss composers before moving to cover the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart with two arias and a motet by Mozart.

Other highlights include Mahler's Symphony No 8, Verdi's Falstaff, Weill's Berlin Requiem and Bernstein's Symphony No 3.

The KKL Centre is one of Switzerland's premiere concert venues standing beside Lake Lucerne but the music will not be confined to the centre.

The Street Festival will see buskers from around the world heading to Lucerne and performances of Brecht's and Weill's The Threepenny Opera will take place in the centre of the city.
