More planes delayed
17 July 2006

In the first quarter of this year delays to flights in Europe were up 1.5%.

Figures from the Association of European Airlines (AEA) which includes 30 major airlines reveal 22.6% of flights within Europe were delayed by more than 15 minutes.

The fewest delays were recorded in Dusseldorf and Gatwick with 17.6% of flights delayed. The top five most punctual airports was completed by Vienna, Brussels and Lisbon.

The worst performing airport was Madrid with a third of flights delayed. Heathrow, Frankfurt, Barcelona and Paris-Charles de Gaulle were all among the airports with the highest number of delays.

Wintry weather caused fewer delays than last year with most unplanned waits being put down to problems with pre-flight preparations and infrastructure.

The only airports to show improvements were Geneva, Amsterdam, Zurich and Vienna.
