EU aims to make the cost of flying fairer
19 July 2006

The European Commission has introduced plans for a single market for aviation across the continent.

The aim is to make the conditions for airlines the same in all countries so no airline has an unfair advantage.

The plans also call for transparency in ticket prices so passengers are not stung by the cost of taxes and other charges on top of advertised prices.

Transport commissioner Jacques Barrot said described how moves in the last ten years to make air transport in the EU had been a success with 60% more routes across the continent since 1997.

He said: 'We want to consolidate this success by removing all restrictions to the free provision of air services and ensuring fair competition between airlines

'Citizens must enjoy the benefits of the single market and have the possibility for more choice and quality. They must be able to easily compare fares between airlines.'

Under the plans, from December 2007 all fares advertised will include applicable taxes, charges and fees, so travellers can fairly compare ticket prices.
