Jet lag-free plane unveiled
24 July 2006

A new plane that offers flights without jet lag has been unveiled at the Farnborough Airshow.

It is claimed the Boeing 787 Dreamliner can substantially reduce the side-effects of long flights through improved air quality and higher air pressure.

Previous problems over creating a hull strong enough to deal with higher pressures and light enough to fly were overcome by using carbon fibre.

Humidity on board is also increased to avoid dehydration.

The prospect of flying without jet lag, however, is some way off as the first test flights are planned for August next year, although several major airlines have already put in orders.

Boeing also claims the 787 Dreamliner will also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases through being lighter.

Mike Bair, general manager of the 787 programme, said: 'When I look at this piece of structure coming together I know that we are seeing the future of our industry.

'We have introduced new materials, new processes, new tools and a new way of working together that is ushering in a new era in commercial aviation.'
