New Miami culture centre gets $30m boost
24 July 2006
The Miami Performing Arts Centre has received a boost to funding of $30m (£16.2m) and a new name.
The Carnival Corporation has given the centre grants worth £10.8m and it will now be known as the Carnival Centre for the Performing Arts.
A further £5.4m of grants from the Knight Foundation will see the concert hall renamed as the Knight Concert Hall.
Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation, explained the importance of the centre.
He said: 'This new complex has been the catalyst for the most phenomenal transformation of an urban downtown since Lincoln Centre caused a revival of New Yorks Upper West Side.
'And in the region, it will augment Miami's reputation as a world-class cultural destination.
'Our dream is of a Knight Concert Hall where the citys great diversity of residents and visitors will hear and see themselves reflected in their music, interests and heritage.'
Over the coming months artists performing at the Carnival Centre include Woody Allen in performance with the New Orleans Jazz Band, Whoopi Goldberg's version of Alice in Wonderland, Lily Tomlin's one-woman show and a range of dance and music performances from around the world.
