Med could get too hot
27 July 2006
New research predicts that global warming could make traditional holiday destinations on the Mediterranean too hot for tourists.
Currently around 100 million tourists head to the Med for the summer from around Europe, but by 2080 it is predicted the old resorts will be too hot.
A study in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism also highlighted possible future destinations.
It suggests the beaches of the Baltic and southern Scandinavia could replace the resorts of Spain, France and Turkey as areas to head for summer holidays.
The study also predicts Mediterranean countries will have to change how they attract tourists focusing on their cultural heritage and food and offering holidays in winter, spring and autumn.
It is predicted through the next decades temperature around the world could rise as much as 5 degrees C.
