UK under-budgets for holidays
28 July 2006
New research shows Britons on holiday spend on average £300 more than they plan to.
In total, this adds up to £8.7 billion of unbudgeted vacation spending a year.
It was found that the average holidaymaker plans to spend £500 while away on a fortnight break, but in fact spends £800.
However, Western Union found that failing to budget on holiday was more common in some areas than in others around the UK.
In Wales, only seven per cent of those jetting away overspend, while in East Anglia and the East Midlands this rises to 24 per cent.
Holidaymakers from Northern Ireland were found to take the most away with them on holiday, while the Scots planned on the least holiday expenditure.
Those on holiday from Northern Ireland were also the most likely to bring cash back with them if only on average £10.
